Dog Mange, hair loss, excessive itching and parasites causes dogs to scratch, lick or bite themselves. If your dog has these symptoms then you have a pet with a skin problem. These problems do not disappear so do not ignore it. You can classify Canine Skin problems in six categories: Allergies: It is impossible to diagnose the main allergens as they are too numerous, but the most common are food ingredients, cleaning products, mold spores, dust mites, pollen and dust. Environmental Conditions: The perfect example is Hot Spots (a form of Eczema). A local area that becomes infected or inflamed on the outer body. Can be caused by accidental nicks, this can become infected which will lead to the dog scratching. Any break in the skin can lead to a Hot Spot. Hot Spots are also caused when a dog has been exposed to rain, swimming in a lake, river or pond. The wet matted fur traps Bacteria which will cause the infection. Infectious Diseases: There are 3 types of Dermatitis Infections Diseases Bacterial: This is less common and mainly found on exposed skin prone to Bacteria - seen on the dog's mouth, nose, eyes etc Fungal: Ringworm and Mould Yeast: The skin turns red and smells very sour. Neurogenic (Self inflicted): This disorder normally follows when a dog has a wound or injury. This is also caused as some dogs lick or bite areas on their body as they are bored. It is very important to keep this area dry and clean. Nutritional: One of the main causal reasons of skin disorders is the food that is fed. Foods to avoid are meat by-products, corn, wheat or any grains and fillers. Foods high in protein are good. Parasites: This is the leading cause of Skin Disorders, initiated by fleas, ticks and mites. Certain mites cause Mange and if not treated can lead to death. Mange Is divided into 3 Categories: Sarcoptic Mange: These mites are the most contagious types of parasites even to humans and are not visible to the human eye. These mites do not only affect dogs but also Felines and other four legged pets. Demodectic Mange: Also called Red Mange which is a type of skin disease caused by the Demodex Canis Mites. This is most common in puppies aged 3 to 9 months old. Cheyletiella Mange: The most discomforting of all the mites and skin disease your dog might get. It is visible to the naked eye and your dog can certainly feel them walking all over their body. (Felines and other four legged pets can also be affected by this). Causes of Mange: Where good hygiene & sanitation is practiced and kept in a healthy environment will tend to build up a strong immune system that can protect itself against parasite infestations. Mites will not thrive on a well kept body at all. If the skin is invaded by the parasite the dog's antibodies will activate and fight them off, but a dog with a compromised immune system will succumb to attack by parasites. Older dogs and puppies are more vulnerable to Mange. The Symptoms of Mange: Excessive ItchingHair LossDry, Crusty and Thickened SkinStrong, Foul OdorSores and Blisters
